“If photographers are responsible for creating or reflecting an image of women in society,” he asserts, “then, I must say, there is only one way for the future, and this is to define women as strong and independent. As a whole, Women II alludes to a larger truth-one that Lindbergh believes can impact our world beyond the pages of a magazine. While Lindbergh built his reputation by helping to define the supermodel era of the ’90s, the past decade of his work has celebrated the natural, elegant beauty of actresses such as Kate Winslet, Jessica Chastain, and Tilda Swinton, as well as seen a new generation of models such as Karen Elson, Arizona Muse, and Cara Delevingne come into their own. The book is prefaced with texts from art historian Werner Spies, director Wim Wenders, and Austrian writer Peter Handke in which each consider the existential “truthfulness” inherent in Lindbergh’s imagery. Images of Women II: 2005-2014 (Schirmer/Mosel), a sequel to the 1997 volume, includes 161 of what he considers to be his best works from this time period. “But also more guts to experiment with a more defined idea of what I want to achieve.” “The last ten years have brought a lot more experience dealing with people in front of the camera,” reflects Lindbergh. Thus were born these “images of women”, which reflect not only an ideal of beauty but also what these women of their time are – Naomi and Nadja, for example, Amber, Kate, Madonna, Tina Turner, Demi Moore, Milla Jovovich… More than perfection and glamor, Lindbergh sought out the radiance and individuality of his models, and this in a way more associated with portrait photography than with the world of fashion. But by his own style which then shaped a whole generation of photographers, he left a real mark. It was the time top-models, a phenomenon which he himself is also behind.

With around 190 black and white photos in brilliant print of the most beautiful and famous women in the world, Lindbergh (1944-2019) then offered a first retrospective of his photographic work from the 1980s and 1990s. Peter Lindbergh‘s collection of Images of Women, published by Schirmer / Mosel for the first time in 1997 and reprinted several times since, today pays tribute to the great fashion photographer who recently died.
